Snus are smokeless tobacco products originated in Sweden several centuries ago but are experiencing a huge growth in popularity during the last couple of years in other countries.
British American Tobacco carried out a telephone poll of Swedes who consume snus regularly (those who consume at least one portion of snus each day) selected in a random order across the Swedish telephone database. Overall, 2,950 surveyed people responded on the questions regarding the usage of snus, which included the frequency and the amount of the snus usage and the types of the preferred products.
According to the statistics of rates of male snus users have decreased by 3 percents from 22 to 19 percent within previous five years, whereas the product accounts for 4 percent of female users across Sweden, rising y 1% over the decade.
Snus are much commonly used by men than by women in Sweden, what was demonstrated by the corresponding numbers of snus users who agreed to take part in the BAT survey, with only 360 women responded, in contrast to 2,590 men.
The greater part of consumers of both loose snus and pouched snus admitted to suck it with the gum. Despite, the majority of snus consumers kept the snus in one place of their mouths during the consumption, a great number 19 percent of loose snus consumers and 37% of those who prefer portion snus moved the products in different places of their mouths when consuming the products.
According to the age groups, the middle-aged users (30-54 years) formed up 50 percent of pouched snus consumers and 60 percent of loose snus users. Among the younger adults (aged 18-25) those who used loose snus made up 11 percent, compared to 23 percent of pouched snus users.
The poll included several questions concerning the amount of snus consumed on average each day, the time of consuming each portion of snus and even the ability of snus to help giving up smoking regular cigarettes.
The men divided approximately equally into the users of portioned snus (55%) and users of loose snus (43%), while female snus users reportedly prefer portioned snus (93%) however, there are several women who even admitted to use both types of those smokeless tobacco products.
Male consumers admitted they averagely use 11.8 grams each day whereas the female consumers use 8.5 grams on average during the same period of time. Although the snus usage remains a popular activity in Sweden, the survey demonstrated that these smokeless tobacco products are more popular in the United States than in their home, Sweden.
